Rippling muscle disease 2

OMIM number: 606072

Comments closing date: 15/03/2026

Rippling muscle disease is characterised by mechanically triggered contractions of skeletal muscle. Symptoms range from muscle stiffness, muscle pain, cramps and proximal muscle weakness. Patients experience percussion induced rapid muscle contractions (PIRCs), often painful muscle mounding, and rolling movements across muscle groups (rippling). This means that the muscles are unusually sensitive to movement or pressure. The age of onset is very variable, typically presenting in late childhood or early adulthood. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern; there is a 50% chance of an affected person passing this down to each child. There is no cure and management is usually symptomatic. Patients may try to avoid triggers. Muscle relaxants may help with severe cramps.
