Lisa Jardine, former Chair of the HFEA, passes away

It is with immense sadness that we learn of the death of Professor Lisa Jardine, our former Chair, who died on 25 October after a long battle with cancer.

HFEA Chair Sally Cheshire said:

"Lisa fought valiantly and with spirit, always positive that she would beat her terrible disease. She remained passionate about the future, seeking new projects and still having so much more to give personally and professionally. Appointed by the Department of Health to lead the HFEA from 2008 to 2014, she led the organisation through a testing period with that same spirit and positive nature, and the HFEA emerged in 2014, stronger and independent thanks in no small part to Lisa's leadership. Lisa's many friends and colleagues at the HFEA and across the fertility sector will remember her for her great intellect, her confidence to speak out and her care for fertility patients. Those of us who knew her personally will also remember her with admiration and fondness, grateful for her immense generosity and personal support."

Jane Ellison, Public Health Minister said:

“Lisa Jardine led the HFEA through a period which addressed highly sensitive and ground-breaking issues with great insight and humanity. She will be very sadly missed, and at this difficult time for her friends and family we recognise the many important ways in which she contributed to society.”

We have opened a book of condolence for Authority Members, staff and sector colleagues, so if you would like to leave a message, please contact Joanne McAlpine at the HFEA or on 0207 291 8252. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with Lisa's family and friends at this difficult time.
